Phil reading George Orwell -1984

Posted by [info]missgalindo in [info]genehunt on 2009.11.15 at 11:15
I've not long finished listening to Phil reading `1984' by George Orwell in a 6 CD audio-book. You get 6 glorious hours of Phil's lovely voice and a rivetting story! (It's like listening to slowly melting chocolate). Phil reads characters in a number of various accents, as well as putting on voices of women and children AND even singing. Pretty versatile chap! You can order it via Phil's site 'Shop' link and also hear a snippet on the Audio link on his site.
Apparently he's also done a recording of his own book 'Things aren't what they Used to Be.' I'll email his site and ask them to confirm and put a link to where we can buy it.

Good vibrations.

Good morning, people!

I'm feeling very good indeed today, so I feel like spreading the love! I've been whining and ranting WAY too much lately, so I think a little happy is very much in order!

It's been a good morning in general. Pea ate like a pig from his morning porridge and consequently is currently sleeping soundly, going on an hour and a half. I've spent the time to sign him up for daycare after new year. I'm nervous about it, but I also think it will be good for all of us. I want Pea to make friends and get out more, and I can't offer him that with my issues. So daycare sounds like just the thing. :o)

When you sign up for daycare, you have to choose at least 1 spot and max. 3. I've signed up for 3 spots. One is a brilliant daycare for children ages 0-3, the other is a combined daycare and pre-school, for children ages 0-6. The last one I really don't know all that much about, but it's supposedly good and it's pretty close to us.

They all require name tags in everything, so I see myself writing Pea's name a zillion times this year. Hehe.

My 'homework' for therapy is going strong. The first day it was hell finding something positive to write down, but yesterday I found myself wondering if I had to restrict myself to noting only 2 things. Hehe.

Other than that, I think I can owe some of my good mood to something of a revelation. Friday I was busy like WOAH getting things ready for naming coffee (-The one for my family. We have one more for hubby's this Saturday.), so I borrowed my mom's car to get a few things done. I can't say I did anything seriously stressful. I bought a microwave oven we've been saving for, for a while (It's EPIC btw!), I dropped off our return bottles that had been slowly filling up our kitchen over the last few months, went shopping and ordered a cake from a bakery. Not exactly rocket science or running a marathon. But it was HELL!! So when I came home, I thought to myself: "If this is the famous 'normal life' then I really don't think I want it." And somehow, that's really a relief. Maybe this will help me to not put so much damned pressure on myself for no reason at all.

Lastly, you can start looking forward to Thursday. Pea turns 6 months then, and I'm planning a HUGE picspam! :oD

Later today I will try to make a slightly more coherent review of the EPIC EPIC EPIC Merlin episode from last night. And quote of the day. No day is complete without Garak and Bashir. My boys. *sigh*

Have a GREAT day, folks!

A few days ago I posted a vid of London in 1927. I think a lot of us were fascinated by how different things were then. Far fewer private vehicles, and every one of them moving much slower than cars would today in the same circumstances. People moved more slowly. More people walking in the streets. Attitudes were considerably different then as well, as were social mores.

And this led me to thinking about Bertie and Jeeves in 1927 and what would happen to them if they got picked up by some cosmic wind and accidentally dropped somewhere in the world today with nothing but the clothes on their backs and what was in their pockets. What would they do? What would they think? Who would adjust more easily?

There would be an immense number of problems for them to overcome. No one would believe them if they tried to tell anyone what had happened, of course, unless the person had happened to witness their arrival. Their money would be essentially useless except as antiques or for the metal in them. They would have no valid identity papers. Almost everything would be strange and confusing. Even if they were still in London, a great deal changed during the second world war. Everyone they knew would be long gone or over 100 years old.

I'd love to hear your theories, esteemed birds and beazels.

Lost Loves.

Or any Rodney/Teyla fics where they meet opposition when the relationship becomes known?

I have broken the wayback machine! I knew - I said to myself, "It may be a bad idea to mix the Doctor and a time machine to this extent, unless I want something to go horribly wrong" - and yet, I did it anyway.

So-- since archive.org is still down for "scheduled maintenance" and it's my bedtime, the next wayback link is put off until later, and we'll have something that was actually posted on livejournal, instead.

Title: The Bell Jar
Characters: Koschei!Master, Theta!Doctor, Ushas!Rani
Length: ficlet
Warnings: fluff!
Author on lj: [info]loneraven
Author website: http://www.sleepingwithghosts.popullus.net/
Why this must be read: There was a small burst of Koschei/Theta fic during the early period of New Who fandom. This is my favorite of them.

It's a tiny vignette, a small lovely bantery moment of happy Academy days preserved forever in stasis - figuratively and literally. And for all I adore Academy!fic that is full of darkness and prefigured pain, this is another story that has become part of canon for me: when I visualize the Academy years, this is precisely what I want to believe they were like.

(And yet this is the Doctor and the Master, so for all the honeyed brilliance in this story, it's hard not to look at the title, and then look at the story again, and start to see shadows--)

Excerpt: Theta jerked his foot. The bucket swung to and fro, and finally dislodged; it landed on the floor with a thump as Theta rolled out of bed. “I think my clothes are here somewhere,” he commented, idly. Ushas had returned to whatever it was that was so interesting on Theta’s desk, and didn’t pay him any attention as he wandered naked around the room.

Over her shoulder, she called, “Did you know Koschei is in your bed?”

“The thought had occurred to me, yes.” Theta couldn’t find socks or boots, but the floors of the citadel tended to be cool and clean enough for bare feet. “I shall shortly be throwing him out of it. And you, for that matter.”

“I’m not in your bed, Theta. Stick to attainable goals.”

Last week, I went over to [info]lotusbrenda's for her Terminate Diabetes fundraiser. I donated a few items, bid on a few items, and had a good time. None of the items I donated were bid on at the event. I say its because I got there late, due to traffic, and most of the biddin' was done by the time I arrived.

So, I left four of the nicer things I had, for Brenda to put on eBay to raise money.

Those four items are now online.

I have read[info]storyfan 's Masked Ball (hot, hot, hot) and [info]triedunture 's Thorny Problem wonderfulness and also that rather old and obscure fic with Bertie introducing Jeeves to the 'community' where Jeeves got with a guy when Bertie had wanted Jeeves all along, but are there any other fine specimens of which you chaps could kindly recommend to me? Hey, Horrible fans. Just wanted to let you all know that Uconn (at the Storrs campus) will be performing Dr. Horrible today and tomorrow. If you're at all in the area, stop by! It's five bucks admission in the Student Union theatre. I'm not sure if they'll be recording it, but if not, I'm bringing my camera. So hopefully I'll have some videos to bring back. :)

It was posted by Whedonesque, which was pretty cool. You can find more details here and here at the Facebook event.

So, naming coffee is well and over. Thank God.

Grandma and grandpa were grand as usual and a great comfort. Good sister was notable only by her rather weird absence, and evil sister... well. Maybe she was high on birth hormones, but for some strange reason she really seemed to be trying to keep the peace. Asked me about things and only nodded or hmm'd when she was clearly disagreeing. Any other time she would have picked a fight. Wow. An effort from her! Amazing. It would be comforting, if it wasn't because she's done this a few times before and then done the complete turnaround soon after, just when you started to think she's really a good person.

But despite her polite attitude towards me and to some extent our mother, I'm still grieved by how she treats her children. The oldest was shouted at for the smallest offence, while the others ran wild for a long time before the shouting reached them. Other than that, she was ignored. Even when evil!sister was talking about her oldest child, she was ignoring her. That poor girl is so shy and unsure, that the only person she apparently dared talk to in the room was her father. Makes me want to cry.

Child #2 was told how clumsy and misbehaved she was several times during the visit. Child #3 was constantly told to relax, because she laughed so hard she started to cough. She has asthma and apparently, this makes her an invalid. I wonder if she's allowed to do anything at all, ever.

The newborn was as most newborns are, relatively unaware of anything but mommy and milk. But it makes me so so so sad to think of the future of mental abuse she has to look forward to. Poor baby.

But I had a really great time with the nieces. We fooled around, and I took full advantage of being in my own house and let them run wild. I don't have many things that are either expensive or won't be able to handle a trip to the floor, so I let them rampage around me in a joyous herd. Or, well, the oldest didn't join in. She moved closer and closer, but never joined, even though I tried including her. Too bad. We had such fun. I was afraid they wouldn't really remember me, since it's been almost a year since we've seen each other last, but they came around quickly and we had a lot of laughs. Sweet girls. :o)

And now... I'm completely exhausted and a little nauseaus from the tons of cake we ate. I hope I can stay awake to watch Merlin later.

Has your idea of the perfect romantic partner changed with age? Do you think we can teach ourselves to desire partners who are better for us or are we constrained by the laws of attraction?

View 364 Answers

My ideas of romantic partners has never really changed. Because I was unpopular and overweight, I learned early on that looks are of secondary importance. Also that beggars can't be choosers. Not that you should settle for crap, but that if you really want a relationship, you're going to have to make a lot of compromises.

But it's totally worth it.

Fighting Spirit

“What have you got against us, Tyler?”

Some days, if he was honest with himself, Sam didn’t know.

Some days he looked at them all and saw ordinary people; people with ingrained habits and imperfect lives and a basic, human determination to keep going.

But then he would close his eyes, stop the struggle, just for one moment, and in his head the monitors would falter.

So he raged out at the wrongness of this world, hit and yelled and railed against it, every day.

He fought to get back home, and tried not to imagine what might be waiting.

I gave up on 'Ashes to Ashes' after episode 1, because it struck me as a lightweight LoM rip-off. But I'm curious to know; they explained Sam's absence from the team straight away, but what about Annie? Is it ever stated what happened to her after the LoM finale?
If they bumped her off as well, then I really will be Seriously Annoyed.
EDIT: And I know that this is, technically, an A2A query, but since it concerns a LoM character who doesn't appear to feature in the sequel at all, it made more sense to ask it here.

Title: The Master Takes a Holiday
Characters: Ainley!Master, Six, Peri, (Four & Romana, in absentia)
Length: 10,000 words / novella
Warnings: none!
Author on lj: unknown
Author website: http://www.templelooters.com
Why this must be read: Because in an ill-fated attempt to escape his troubles and memories for a few weeks, the Master picks absolutely the worst possible planet to take a holiday on. (The word "eccentric" in the TARDIS's guide book probably should have been a hint.)

This isn't an explicitly slashy story, but it's all about the Master's relationship with the Doctor, and it's all dead-on, deadpan Master POV, and it's a witty, cozy, comedic little caper story that could have come right out of an original serial. And the author's found a device to let Ainley!Master respond to Four, which there's so little room for in canon, and there ought to have been. And also a device to force him to wear The Scarf.

Excerpt: Soon the Master saw carriages coming from the opposite direction. As they passed within hailing distance of Lazarrn's carriage, Lazarrn called "Lovely day!" cheerily to each and every driver, and each replied in kind. Whether or not they had hats or coats, the Master noticed that all the drivers wore absurdly long multi-colored scarves. If he didn't want to be reminded of the Doctor, it was beginning to look as though he had picked the wrong planet for a holiday.

The buildings by the side of the road were coming closer together, and soon the carriage arrived in the center of town. People strolled casually in and out of shops, apparently without a care in the world. "Lovely day. Have a jellybaby," they greeted each other cheerfully. Little white paper bags flourished.

You can also find the original!Illustrated!version on the wayback machine, where it is up at the archived copy of Ping Hai's Basement. Unfortunately, I don't know if this author is still writing fic, and if so under what name.

Hey,

I'm looking for some fics where John doesn't like touching, hardly ever touches anyone, or he flinches when someone tries to touch him and his team, or Rodney notices and help him with the issue by slowly getting him used to people touching him. Gen, Mcshep or OT4 preferred.
